Environmentally Friendly Cleaning

The environment, and its conservation, is an acknowledged factor in deciding how we live our daily lives. Governments and other agencies have policies and directives to control and protect the lived environment, but in addition individuals now feel a responsibility themselves to take action to preserve and protect their surroundings. There are a number of actions that people and companies can take such as using smaller cars, low energy light bulbs etc., and there are tasks that are done that can be carried out in an environmentally way. One of these is cleaning either domestically or in industrial or commercial premises. There are two factors that can impact on the environment during the cleaning process. One is the materials used and the other is the resources employed to carry out the cleaning.

Environmentally Friendly Cleaning – Materials

We cannot fail to be aware of the plethora of cleaning products available on the market; indeed we would have to live in a cave to avoid the barrage of advertisements and endorsements that urge us to buy. Some people are uncomfortable with the use of chemicals in cleaning, believing them to be potentially harmful and unnecessarily caustic. This has led to a rediscovery of the old ways of cleaning such as using vinegar or baking soda amongst others. It is claimed that they are as good as manufactured products and some commercial cleaning solutions now make a selling point of their lack of chemicals. It may be, however, that cleaning solutions, man-made or otherwise, may not be sufficient to achieve the level of cleanliness required and it might be that an appliance like a steam cleaner could be used. A steam cleaner does not normally need chemicals to assist the cleaning process as it uses super heated water to reduce the grease and grime to a liquid state to enable it to be removed. The only impact on the environment is the use of water and the energy to heat it.

Environmentally Friendly Cleaning – Resources

One of the main resources used in cleaning is water both in domestic and commercial cleaning. There is no substitute for water so to be environmentally friendly less of it should be used. In industrial cleaning machinery is often employed because of efficiency and to reduce fatigue and potential hazards to employees. It could be said that industrial cleaning machines are a necessary evil but that is not to say that efforts are made to reduce the environmental impact that they make.
