This time of year, everything outside looks a bit grubby doesn’t it? The usual debris that collects all year round, tends to get a bit overlooked in these short, dark days. Then there’s the effect of storms and heavy rain, snow and frost, all of which we’ve seen this winter. Some parts of the UK have suffered their worst winter weather for several years, and we’re still experiencing some snow and icy conditions, with more being forecast even though the snowdrops and crocuses are starting to appear.
Having your outside areas looking clean and tidy is important to create the right impression of your business. As you’ll know, regular sweeping of entrances, forecourts, car parks etc is essential for safety reasons too, as dirty surfaces can also increase the likelihood or slips and trips. In winter, wet or frozen leaves and particles can be a real hazard. Any areas where your staff, or the public, may need to walk to gain access to your premises need your attention, as you have a duty or care to ensure that they are safe to use. Winter sweeping may not be top of everyines “to-do” list, but it makes sense to do it regularly.
For retailers of outdoor products, the failure to keep areas clean and safe could directly impact your business! One of our team had a strange experience earlier this winter during an icy spell, when he visited a well-known retailer to buy some bags of grit, only to be told that whilst they had grit available in the yard, they couldn’t supply it as the yard wasn’t safe for them to work in. Not a job for a sweeper on this occasion, but something like the SnowEx Utility Spreader might have been useful for them. A lost opportunity there perhaps.
What’s the best way to get your winter sweeping done?
It probably depends on how large your outdoor areas are, and in some cases, manual sweeping might do the job. It can be back breaking work though and doesn’t always get the best results either. Fortunately there’s a wide range of commercial sweeping equipment available to help.
We’ve had a lot of enquiries for sweeping machines this winter and have recently added some new outdoor cleaning equipment to our website catalogue, including heavy duty sweepers designed for outdoor use and able to operate in all kinds of weather, with the capacity to collect large volumes of heavy waste. Outdoor sweeping machines have advanced significantly in recent years, and the machines available today are typically multifunctional, quiet, ergonomically designed and economical to run.
The Nilfisk SW5500 (as shown above) for example, features a wet sweep bypass, enabling it to be used in wet weather, to clear away dust and debris. This floor sweeper can be supplied with a “Hybrid kit” which enables indoor and outdoor use with the facility to switch from LPG or diesel engine to battery power, depending on the conditions.
For large outdoor areas and street cleaning, the Karcher MC 50 ride-on sweeper can be used all year round for sweeping, featuring all-wheel drive to cope with wet or slippery surfaces. Attachments are available to enable this machine to operate as a lawn mower or snow clearer too.
An alternative solution for occasional use, is a sweeper attachment, like the Broomex push broom. Simply attach to a forklift or other type of vehicle and sweep up debris, leaves and light snow.
Take a look at our outdoor cleaning equipment here and there are more products coming soon, so do check back again.
