Floor Sweeper

The act of sweeping floors has probably been part of civilisation since humankind first found shelter and tied some twigs round a stick to create a rudimentary broom. The broom has changed little over the eons; however the mechanisation of sweeping has made a dramatic difference to cleaning in the workplace and outside.
The difficulty with manual sweeping is that it is time consuming and labour intensive, and in the hands of an inexpert operative, can be more trouble than it’s worth, Mechanical floor sweepers have removed the problem of dust particles being thrown into the air and residue being left on the floor. At its simplest level, a floor sweeper employs a rotating brush to dislodge the dirt from the surface and move it back where it is collected and deposited within the machine.

Pedestrian Operated Floor Sweepers

There are different machines suitable for the operation required. For smaller areas or where the access is narrow, a “walk behind” or pedestrian operated machine could be used. These can be battery or engine powered (which are more suitable for out door work) and can, in some cases, also be suitable for carpets. The controls are on the handle of the machine and can be pre- programmed to maximise efficiency,

Ride-on Floor Sweepers

For larger areas and perhaps a tougher cleaning requirement then a ride -on floor sweeper would be a good option. These machines can also be battery powered but are more usually engine powered using petrol, diesel or LPG. This type of floor sweeper usually has a configuration of brushes and a sophisticated extraction system to collect the waste, often employing a filtration system as well. The ride-on floor sweeper is often used on outside applications particularly for litter clearance.

In selecting one of the many floor sweepers on the market account should be taken of the charged battery life (where electric powered), and of the width of sweep to ensure that the maximum benefit is achieved. The floor sweeper selected should be of robust construction to cope with the hard work it will be put to.
