Cleaning Driveways

The reason for cleaning driveways is not only aesthetic, to show your property to its best advantage, but also from a health and safety point of view to ensure the area is clean and free from debris that might cause someone to slip or trip, particularly important in commercial premises.

Cleaning Driveways – The Problem

A driveway is often extensively used by people and vehicles and this takes its toll on the appearance of the driveway over time, as do the elements. We often only notice how bad the driveway has been discoloured in the better weather, when we see the effects of the winter weather. The result is a driveway that is discoloured and marked with possibly a build up of moss, mildew, algae etc. When the driveway has lost its lustre over time, it is difficult to clean using non mechanical methods, a quick sweep and a hose down will not be sufficient to return the driveway to its former glory. Cleaning Driveways – The Solution

Driveways are subject to a lot of traffic both vehicular and human which causes unavoidable build up of marks and stains. The weather also has a detrimental effect with the elements taking their toll on the surface. The result is a driveway that is discoloured and marked with possibly a build up of moss, mildew, algae etc. When the driveway has lost its lustre over time, it is difficult to clean using non mechanical methods, a quick sweep and a hose down will not be sufficient to return the driveway to its former glory. When a driveway has become discoloured and unappealing and mechanical assistance is required, then a pressure washer could be used, after sweeping the surface, for added cleaning power. A pressure washer has to be used carefully and sized appropriately to the job in hand. If it is too powerful it can damage the surface and it can be difficult sometimes to get an even clean and it can give a striped appearance. The best answer is to use a pressure washer with a rotawash or whirlaway attachment which ensures even cleaning over the surface. This attachment directs the pressurised water on to the surface via opposing tubes which then rotate so allowing an even distribution of cleaning water. The unit is housed in a robust cover to prevent splashback, which is another problem with using a pressure washer alone. The results obtained with a rotawash or whirlaway show an even clean without stripes, returning the driveway to its former glory.
